OUR STORY, TOLD DIFFERENTLY
WHY NOW

Growing up in rural Africa, livestock was our family’s most valuable asset. We relied on them for schooling, medication, nutrition, and cultural events. Watching my family lose cows due to the lack of a veterinary laboratory in our town was frustrating—a reality still faced by 95% of rural African markets today. Veterinarians are still forced to use guess work in deciding treatment.

Over the past decade, my co-founder Robert and I have led a team dedicated to empowering women in underbanked areas by delivering financial products. Through technology and a network of field officers, we provided financial literacy, productive assets, and credit, positively impacting over 400,000 lives.

We found that livestock is often the most valuable asset for rural families, often used in appraising credit ability. However, these herds mostly consist of low-productivity indigenous breeds that are susceptible to disease and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.

Listening to small-holder farmers, we hypothesized that with reliable health interventions, smallholder farmers would adopt improved livestock breeds and better technologies. This shift could enhance productivity, reduce methane emissions by over 50% per farm, while facilitating affordable financing and insurance.

This challenge inspired us to take action.

Challenges facing Small-holder Dairy Farming in Africa

THESE ARE THE PROBLEMS WE ARE WORKING WITH FARMERS TO SOLVE

01

Livestock Diseases

Diseases such as mastitis, foot-and-mouth disease, and tick-borne diseases are common in African dairy farming regions. Lack of access to vaccines and veterinary services increases the risk of disease outbreaks and reduces livestock health.

02

Green House Emission

Farmers de-risk their investments by having a big but low-quality herd; which multiplies toxic methane gas emissions. Livestock contributes to two-thirds of methane emissions globally.

03

Limited Access to Inputs

Smallholder farmers often lack access to quality inputs such as improved breeds of cattle, veterinary services, feed, and water. This limits their ability to improve productivity and increase milk yields.

04

Lack of Extension Services

Insufficient support from extension services and agricultural advisory programs limits farmers' knowledge about best practices in dairy farming, disease management, and modern techniques for improving productivity.

05

Low Productivity

Productivity per cow is often low due to factors such as poor genetics, inadequate nutrition, and suboptimal management practices.

06

Animal to Human Diseases

Farmers face significant risks from over 200 zoonotic diseases, which threaten livestock productivity and farm workers' health, contributing to 2.5 billion cases of human illness and 2.7 million deaths worldwide each year.
