Challenges Facing Small-Holder Dairy Farming In Africa

THESE ARE THE PROBLEMS WE ARE WORKING WITH FARMERS TO SOLVE

Livestock Diseases

Diseases such as mastitis, foot-and-mouth disease, and tick-borne diseases are common in African dairy farming regions. Lack of access to vaccines and veterinary services increases the risk of disease outbreaks and reduces livestock health

Green House Emission

Farmers de-risk their investments by having a big but low-quality herd; which multiplies toxic methane gas emissions. Livestock contributes to two-thirds of methane emissions globally.

Low Productivity

Productivity per cow is often low due to factors such as poor genetics, inadequate nutrition, and suboptimal management practices.

Limited Access to Inputs

Smallholder farmers often lack access to quality inputs such as improved breeds of cattle, veterinary services, feed, and water. This limits their ability to improve productivity and increase milk yields.
